Background
Sutton is the perfect example of a classic New England farm town. Quoted as being “right out of a Norman Rockwell Painting” It was founded around 1704 Right on the top of a hill by early English settlers. Before that however, the land was lived on by the Nipmuc Tribe of Native Americans. Throughout the 18th century Sutton remained Mostly English with a hint of Native American. When the 19th century came, mills started popping up, and with that came a blend workers with different ethnicities such as; French Canadian, Irish, Italian, German, Dutch, Armenian, and Swedish. Many of their descendants still living in the area. Due to this many cultural practices are still kept intact within families. Many of these traditions are as old as they come in America because the town was settled many years before the USA was formed. Due to Suttons Ideal Location between Boston and Hartford It, was a popular Inn town back when travel took many days. This kept Sutton connected with the fads and happenings of the big cities. People such as John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin would rest at the Local inn during travel.
